Becoming a scuba diver is not only fun and exciting, it’s a great way to meet new friends and experience the underwater world.

At Bay City Scuba we know that safe scuba diving revolves around quality education and practical experience, there are certain rules and theories you need to understand in order to become a safe and competent diver, during the theory component you will not only learn them but you will understand the principles behind them. Our education program is like no other, we take a fresh approach to dive education using the latest in online training programs offered by our training partner RAID, audio visual aids, class discussions and a series of practical workshops, as well as a lot of direct interaction with your instructor. 

Our RAID Open Water 20 program is aimed to make sure that our students are getting the very best underwater experience. With a maximum instructor to student ratio of 1:4, allowing our instructors to be able to spend time individually with each student to make sure they are comfortable and are getting all the attention they need.

You must be:

  • To be a minimum of 15 years old.Complete a RAID Approved Medical Statement
  • Complete the RAID registration procedures.
  • Be able to swim 200m without the use of snorkeling equipment (mask, snorkel or fins) and any other swimming aids.
  • Perform a 10-minute survival float without the use of snorkeling equipment (mask, snorkel or fins) and any other swimming aids.

Bay City Scuba will supply all your hardware during your open water course which you can hire.

You will need to bring the following soft wear equipment to your practical component of this course.

Single Back Mount Configuration:

  • Single-cylinder of adequate capacity (11litres or above)
  • DIN First stage
  • One Standard regulator with 2m / 7ft hose with piston clip for clipping off regulator when stowed or standard short hose configuration.
  • One Back-up regulator wit standard length hose fitted with a neck bungee
  • One low-pressure inflator hose for BCD
  • One low-pressure inflator hose for Dry Suit (If required)
  • One SPG with piston clip for attaching to D’Ring when stowed

General Diving Equipment and Accessories:

  • 1 x primary mixed gas (Helium capable) dive computer if completing and mixed gas programs
  • 1 x Orange SMB
  • 1 x Whistle
  • 1 x 15-20m spool
  • 2 x double ended Piston clips
  • 2 x cutting devices (sensible knife or line cutters no massive Rambo knives)
  • 1 x Primary Mask
  • 1 x Backup mask (must fit and be useable)
  • 1 x Set of fins suitable for scuba diving
  • 1 x Snorkel
  • 1 Primary torch that has sufficient illumination for signaling buddy in low light conditions)
  • 1 Suitable exposure suit (drysuit, undergarments, semidry or wetsuit depending on water temperature)
  • 1 x Hood
  • 1 x Set of gloves
RAID Open Water 20 Basic course includes:
  • 1x Evening of theory on a Thursday night
  • 1x Pool training session
  • 2x Shore dives
  • 2x Boat dives
  • (Completed over 4 days)

The Platinum RAID Open Water 20 course includes:
  • 2x Evenings of theory
    1x Evening of Open Water theory on a Thursday night
    1x Evening of Enriched Air Nitrox theory on a Thursday night
  • 1x Pool training session
  • 4x Shore dives
  • 4x Boat dives
  • An additional qualification in the use of Nitrox gas.
  • (Completed over 7 days)

The Platinum Plus+ RAID Open Water 20 course includes:
  • 2x Evenings of theory
    1x Evening of Open Water theory on a Thursday night
    1x Evening of Enriched Air Nitrox theory on a Thursday night
  • 1x Pool training session

  • 6x Boat dives
  • An additional qualification in the use of Nitrox gas.

Confined Water Training:

Before setting you free on the oceans of the world, you will need to learn a few basic skills, things such as clearing your mask underwater, sharing air with your dive buddy, understanding the importance of mastering buoyancy & many other skills that will make you a confident, proficient & competent diver. At Bay City Scuba, our emphasis is to ensure that you are ready to proceed to the next step once you have achieved mastery of the skills in a controlled environment, not just rushed through. This module is run in the comfort of a heated swimming pool over a half or full-day depending on the program that you choose.

Open Water Training Day 1:

The following day or days depending on your selected program you will do a series of shore dives, each will average 50 minutes to 1 hour, on each dive you will be required to demonstrate the skills you acquired in your pool training and to familiarize yourself with the marine environment.

Open Water Training Day 2:

The following day will see us board the dive vessel to undertake 2 boat dives, one of which will have you reach a depth of 20 meters – this is the certifying depth through our internationally recognized training partner RAID. This is your passport to dive anywhere in the world independently of a dive professional!
